The wine world, once a male-dominated arena, is undergoing a transformative shift, and it's about time! Meet Pascaline Lepeltier and Paz Levinson, two trailblazing women who are not just cracking open bottles, but the very foundations of a male-dominated industry.

Pascaline, a seasoned wine advisor at Chambers restaurant in New York, recalls her early days when a certain demographic of male clients questioned her expertise. Paz, who oversees wine at renowned chef Anne-Sophie Pic's establishments, faced similar challenges in France. But here's where it gets controversial: despite these initial hurdles, both women have risen to the top of their field, proving that talent knows no gender.

And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about individual success stories. These women are part of a larger movement that's reshaping the industry. "Things have evolved in terms of gender balance. It’s not parity yet, but we're getting there," says Pascaline, who holds the prestigious title of Best Sommelier of France.

But here's the catch: while progress is undeniable, the numbers tell a different story. Women still make up less than 10% of candidates at the World's Best Sommelier competition, and none has claimed the top spot. Veronique Rivest, Nina Jensen, and Julie Dupouy have come close, but the title remains elusive. "We still have the top spot to claim as the world's best sommeliers. We're keeping the hope alive," Paz asserts.

The 1970s and 1980s saw a few pioneering female sommeliers, but the real breakthrough came around 20 years ago, according to Fabrice Sommier, president of the French Sommeliers Union. Today, women make up nearly half of those in training in France, and a new generation is rising, driven by societal changes that are breaking down gender barriers.

But does gender really make a difference in how sommeliers perform their roles? Alexandre Lesieur, a teacher at the elite Ecole de Paris des Métiers de la Table, believes so. He claims women "venture more into niche regions and products" and suggest "gentler" pairings. However, Pauline Monclus, one of his apprentices, disagrees. "Everyone has their own personality, regardless of gender," she counters.

As Pascaline prepares for another shot at the World's Best Sommelier competition, she reflects on the progress made and the challenges that remain. "Equality isn't here yet, but we're more supported and surrounded than ever before."
