Minimalist Concrete Church Wins World Building of the Year 2025! | Holy Redeemer Church, Tenerife (2025)

Imagine a building so striking, it redefines its surroundings and becomes a beacon of hope. That's precisely what the Holy Redeemer Church and Community Centre in La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain, has achieved, earning it the prestigious title of World Building of the Year at the 2025 World Architecture Festival (WAF). This isn't just a building; it's a testament to how architecture can revitalize communities.

Designed by Fernando Menis Architect, this structure stands as a powerful symbol in a neglected neighborhood, acting as a catalyst for urban renewal. Menis himself noted that winning is a 'great gift,' not only for him but also for the church's neighborhood, which will now gain recognition far beyond Tenerife.

Inspired by the rugged volcanic landscape of the region, the church's design features massive, raw forms, intentionally contrasting with the existing environment. But here's where it gets interesting: The judges at WAF were particularly impressed by the way the architecture uses light to shape the interiors, enhancing the tactile nature of the surfaces. Paul Finch, WAF program director, highlighted how the building masterfully balances the symbolic and everyday needs of the community, making it a valuable addition to Tenerife's architecture.

The project cleverly incorporates a church, a community center, and a public square, creating a vital gathering space for local residents. It's a place where people can come together, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

In addition to the World Building of the Year, WAF 2025, held in Miami, Florida, also awarded titles like World Interior of the Year, Future Project of the Year, and Landscape of the Year. The Fractal Chapel in Austria, designed by Innocad Architecture, took home the World Interior of the Year award. This chapel, hosted by the Protestant Church and located within a state hospital in Graz, offers a tranquil space for patients, staff, and visitors, skillfully blending science, art, and nature in its design. Its fractal patterns, inspired by natural geometry, create a unique and calming atmosphere.
