When it comes to escalators and elevators, the DC Metro system leads the pack in North America, boasting an impressive total of 674 units. The standout among them is the Wheaton station escalator located in Montgomery County, which stretches a remarkable 230 feet. This makes it not only the longest escalator in the DC Metro network but also the longest single-span escalator across the whole of the Western Hemisphere, as shown in the video below.
To put its length into perspective, the Wheaton escalator surpasses the next longest escalator at Bethesda by 18 feet. If you find yourself riding this escalator without stepping off, you'll take approximately 2 minutes and 52 seconds to reach the bottom. It's worth noting that only two other escalators in the Metro system exceed 200 feet: those at Woodley Park and Medical Center. Following them are several others, including stations at Rosslyn, DuPont Circle (both North and South), and Tenleytown, which all have shorter escalators.

Another long escalator can be found at the Peachtree Center MARTA Station in Atlanta, measuring 190 feet. In New York City, the Grand Central Madison Terminal offers long escalators, with some sources listing their length at 182 feet. Finally, the CityPlace DART Station in Dallas, Texas, features an escalator that is 138 feet long.
