A young man’s dream of building a better future abroad ends in a horrifying tragedy — and now his grieving family is demanding answers.
The family of 29-year-old Indian student Vijay Kumar Sheoran from Haryana's Charkhi Dadri district has made a desperate appeal to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to bring his body back from the United Kingdom after he was fatally stabbed in Worcester last week. Their plea to the Indian government, submitted through a formal letter on November 26, highlights the unbearable wait for closure and the complicated bureaucratic path they now face.
Vijay’s elder brother, Ravi Kumar, wrote to the External Affairs Minister asking for immediate help in repatriating his younger brother’s remains. He urged that clear directions be issued to the Indian High Commission in London for “urgent assistance” and “full support” in completing all necessary formalities. The family emphasized that without government intervention, it would be nearly impossible to navigate the maze of foreign legal procedures, documentation checks, and financial costs involved in bringing Vijay back home.
According to Ravi’s letter, Vijay had been pursuing management studies at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol. On November 25, he was discovered with multiple stab wounds on Barbourne Road in Worcester around 4:15 a.m. local time. Despite doctors' efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. “Our entire family is shattered by this loss,” Ravi stated, expressing his hope that Vijay’s final rites could be performed in their ancestral village of Jagrambass in Badhra tehsil.
The responsibility for investigating the crime lies with the Worcester CID team under West Mercia Police. So far, six individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder but have since been released on bail as the investigation continues. And here’s the part that raises eyebrows — none of the suspects’ identities or possible motives have been revealed yet. A crime reference number was shared with the Sheoran family, but they claim that detailed updates remain scarce, deepening their anguish.
Vijay’s story adds another tragic chapter to the experiences of Indian students abroad, many of whom leave secure jobs behind for the hope of better educational and professional prospects. Before moving to the UK earlier this year, Vijay had served as an officer in the central government’s excise and customs department in Kochi. “He gave up a stable government career to chase growth and success overseas,” Ravi shared. “We never imagined that this bold step would end like this.”
The family continues to press two key demands: immediate repatriation of Vijay’s body and swift justice for his murder. They fear that if international coordination is delayed and pressure lessens, those responsible might slip through legal gaps.
