The Flaming Lips are moving forward, but what does it mean for their sound?
It seems a major shift has occurred within the iconic band, The Flaming Lips. Drummer Matthew Duckworth Kirksey has stepped forward to address the departure of Steven Drozd, a key figure in the band for over three decades. Kirksey's statement, made over the weekend, boldly claims that the group's live performances are now "better than ever." But what does this mean for the band's future, and how will it impact their sound?
Drozd's exit was subtly revealed on Threads when he responded to a fan's question about his status with the band. His response, which has since been deleted, was clear: "They’re done with me — but we’re not talking about it. So yes, I’m moving on." This news sent ripples through the music community, sparking speculation about the band's direction.
In response to the growing buzz, Duckworth Kirksey, who joined the Flaming Lips in 2014, took to Instagram to share his perspective. He acknowledged the challenges of being in a band that consistently tours, highlighting that some members can endure the lifestyle for 5 years, while others can stay for 25 years. He emphasized that many friends have come and gone, and he still loves and misses them.
He then made a strong appeal to fans, urging them to experience the "newest iteration" of the band, asserting that the music and show are better than ever. But here's where it gets controversial: Duckworth Kirksey directly addressed the idea that Drozd was the primary creative force behind the band, rather than frontman Wayne Coyne. He stated emphatically, "NONE of this ever happens without Wayne." He clarified that Wayne drives the creativity, sound, and show forward.
Duckworth Kirksey concluded with enthusiasm, revealing that new music is on the way and he believes it to be their best work in ages. He encouraged fans to catch them live this summer.
And this is the part most people miss... Drozd's last performance with the band appears to have been on October 12, 2024, during their tour with Weezer. When the band resumed touring in January 2025, A.J. Slaughter joined them on guitar. Drozd's contributions to the Flaming Lips were significant. He joined the band in 1991, playing drums initially before expanding his role to include guitars, keyboards, bass, backup vocals, and songwriting.
