Get ready to raise a glass! Domhnall Gleeson, the incredibly talented actor, is set to be celebrated at the prestigious Oscar Wilde Awards. This announcement has generated excitement among film enthusiasts.
The US-Ireland Alliance is organizing the event, and it's scheduled for March 12th, just three days before the Academy Awards, at the Ebell theater in Los Angeles.
Alongside Gleeson, Boston native Maura Tierney will also be honored, and Irish singer Dave Lofts will be providing the entertainment at this 20th annual celebration. The awards shine a spotlight on the achievements of those from Ireland, and some non-Irish individuals, who have made significant contributions to film, television, and music.
Gleeson, aged 42, has had a remarkable year. He's currently captivating audiences as the idealistic editor in the Peacock mockumentary series The Paper. He also starred in the Apple TV films Fountain of Youth, directed by Guy Ritchie, and Echo Valley, where he shared the screen with Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney.
He also lent his voice to several historical figures in Ken Burns’ recent PBS documentary series The American Revolution. Moreover, he's set to appear in the BBC Christmas special The Scarecrow’s Wedding, alongside 2023 Oscar Wilde honoree Jessie Buckley.
But here's where it gets interesting: Gleeson, the son of Oscar-nominated actor Brendan Gleeson, is no stranger to major franchises. He's famously known for his role as Bill Weasley in the Harry Potter films and as the ruthless General Hux in the Star Wars sequels.
Did you know? In 2006, Gleeson earned a Tony nomination for his Broadway debut in Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore. It was here that US-Ireland Alliance president Trina Vargo first noticed his talent.
Vargo stated, “His talent was obvious twenty years ago, it’s been a pleasure to watch him go from strength to strength, and we look forward to honoring him.”
Gleeson's filmography is extensive, with notable roles in Never Let Me Go, True Grit, Anna Karenina, About Time, Ex Machina, Brooklyn, The Revenant, American Made, Mother!, Goodbye Christopher Robin, and Peter Rabbit.
He's also made his mark on television, appearing in HBO's Run and White House Plumbers. He starred in and co-created the Prime Video series Frank of Ireland and starred in the FX/Hulu limited series The Patient. Most recently, he starred in and executive produced the Channel 4/PBS limited series Alice & Jack.
The Oscar Wilde Awards are supported by Northern Ireland Screen and Screen Ireland.
