Akin 'Shuga' Tofowomo: A Life Beyond Polio | Tribute to a Musical Legend (2026)

Akin 'Shuga' Tofowomo: A Life Unbound by Polio, A Friend Remembered

The news of Akin's sudden passing while undergoing surgery in Canada left us all in a state of shock and grief. As we bid farewell to him on November 29th, we find ourselves grappling with the reality of a world without his vibrant presence. Yet, the impact he had on our lives will forever shine brightly.

Akin contracted polio at a young age, but it was his resilience and joy that defined him, not the disease. For those fortunate enough to share six unforgettable years with him at Federal Government College, Enugu, it was the bond of friendship and brotherhood that stood out the most.

It was September 1983, a pivotal moment in our lives. We, a diverse group of children from every corner of Nigeria, found ourselves in the dormitories of Federal Government College, Enugu. Among us was Akinloye Tofowomo, a young boy with a unique walk, one hand on his knee, and a visible difference in his legs. We quickly formed an unbreakable community, navigating the challenges of adolescence together.

Akin was at the center of our class of '89, a constant source of strength and camaraderie. Despite his polio-induced flaccid paralysis in one leg, he embraced life fully. Thanks to the support of his parents and the stability of middle-class life in 1980s Nigeria, Akin thrived. He worked hard, played hard, and left an indelible mark on our lives.

Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or during our leisurely weekend strolls around the school grounds, Akin was an integral part of our journey. We fetched water, washed clothes, and raced for meals together, all while sharing stories of our past and dreams for the future. We believed in the promise of a glorious future for Nigeria, and Akin's presence only strengthened that belief.

As we parted ways after secondary school, pursuing different paths and careers, Akin chose music, a path less traveled by our contemporaries. His choice taught us all a valuable lesson—to embrace life's uncertainties and support one another. And so, we did.

Akin's star rose in Lagos, and his light continued to guide us. I had the privilege of witnessing his early career, being the best man at a wedding where Akin and his 'Shuga Band' performed. It was a moment of connection and shared dreams. Little did we know then that our paths would diverge again as we navigated the complexities of adulthood.

But social media brought us back together, reconnecting us with our classmates and reminding us of the powerful bond we shared. We had grown, and so had our confidence in our chosen paths. We instinctively supported each other, determined to make a difference and give back to the school that had shaped us.

And here's where it gets controversial... The fight against polio became a personal mission for me, and I found the courage to speak with Akin about his experience with the disease. I wanted our relationship to transcend any labels or definitions, and he opened up about his journey, sharing his public advocacy for polio eradication. He recognized his platform and used it to empower others, founding the 'Shuga Limb Foundation' to support those facing physical challenges.

Akin inspired us all to make the most of our lives, each in our unique ways. For you, Akin, we pledge to continue the fight against polio. We will push forward, knowing we have the tools and the will to finish what we started. Rest in peace, my brother. Your legacy lives on in our hearts and in the lives you touched.
